They all seem so wonderful when they
are small and fluffy. You gaze at their beauty and say, "I've got to have one of
those".
There are things about every breed people need to know
and understand before they purchase. Not all breeds are the same. Each one has their own
temperament and characteristics (see
Husky Description) and
sometimes they do not conform to the lifestyle of the purchaser. That's why it is so
important to study the breed you are considering very closely before making a decision.
Below are just a few of the things that we see in the
Siberian Husky that you might want to consider.
The Siberian Husky
~like all larger breeds will not stay small. They grow
up very quickly. In six to eight months they are nearing their full size.
~requires a lot of attention. Though classified as
working dogs, they are one that needs the daily affectionate touch of the owner. Not a
breed for the one who stays in the fast lane with little time to spare. Left unattended
for long periods of time can lead them to seeking something to take the place of that lack
of attention. They may even tear something up. Correct training does help some but they
still need a certain amount of hands on loving or it can be disastrous.
~loves to dig. If you keep a well cared for yard,
beware that it is not the ideal kennel arrangement for your Siberian Husky. Keep them
separated from areas where you have worked so hard to make beautiful. In time you can show
them what you want.
~does shed quite a lot, especially in warmer locations.
They have two coats and each year the down (or undercoat) is shed once or twice. Usually
it is finished in 3-6 weeks getting ready to put on a new one. Consistent brushing helps
to tolerate.
~does not make a good protector/watch dog. Some will
have good instincts and let you know when something is wrong. Seldom will you find one
that will bite. If a watch dog is what your looking for check out other breeds. You may
find something more suitable.
~has been mistaken by farmers many times for wolves.
They have even been shot and killed in some instances. They like to run after cattle and other animals and most farmer will not tolerate this. It is best to keep them secure
inside a kennel or back yard if you intend on leaving them outside and if walked it needs
to be done on a leash.
~has been known to kill cats. However, we have
received many reports from some of our adoptive families that tell us that their Siberian Husky
plays with the cat. One has mentioned that their Sibe and their cat sleep together. Early
socialization has contributed to this.
Great Things About the Siberian
Husky
~they are wonderful companion dogs. If you have a
little time during the day to give them, they will try to please. Over a period of time
they will become a best friend to you, always loyal, ready to do what pleases you.
~they are one of the healthiest breeds today. Few
genetic problems exist in them. This means you will have a healthy companion for many
years and the only vet bills required should be annual visits.
~they are wonderful with children because they love
attention.
~they are an extremely clean breed. Siberian Huskies
are known to produce very litter odor when compared to most other breeds. Some have told
us they have noticed their Siberian Husky cleaning themselves at times much like a cat
with their licking.
~they are a quick learner. They do very well in
obedience schools.
~they make a good companion with other breeds
especially when they are raised with them. Sibes are not one that requires all of the
attention. They may get a little jealous of time spent with another companion dog but
adapt well. They learn to share your love and attention.
~they are a beautiful canine specimen. You'll be proud
to walk down the street with them knowing you have purchased one the most gorgeous of all
the breeds.
